Bitfinex Denies Large-Scale Data Breach, Investigates Alleged Hackers
Bitfinex's chief technology officer, Paolo Ardoino, has confirmed that the claims of a large-scale data breach targeting the exchange were "fake." Ardoino stated that Bitfinex's user database was not breached and that the alleged hackers posted a list of emails and passwords stolen from other breaches. He also suggested that the hackers may have gathered data from various other crypto data breaches, as many users unfortunately use the same email and passwords across multiple sites. Bitfinex will continue to investigate the situation, but no breach has been detected so far and all funds are safe. This is not the first time Bitfinex has faced scrutiny over data breach concerns, as it experienced a security breach in 2016 resulting in the loss of customers' Bitcoin.
